I need to give a shout-out to Matthew Thorne and Derik Lynch whose short film, Marungka tjalatjunu (Dipped in Black) has just won the $20,000 Documentary Australia Award at the Sydney Film Festival. This comes after winning the Silver Bear Jury International Short Film Award at the Berlinale earlier this year.
Why am I mentioning this? Well, the SAFC has just granted development funding to Matthew – who is a fantastic photographer as well as a filmmaker – and me to work on a full-length film. It’s called Flatlands and comes out of Matthew’s work with Indigenous rugby player Nathan Bush. It interrogates men, manhood, and Adelaide past and present through a contemporary story. Mathew will direct and write. I will go nowhere near directing, but I’ll be doing a lot of writing!
